He is also a New Jersey native, and he began sailing on the Toms River as a youngster.

He has been elected president of US SAILING, the national governing body for the sport. Here is the US Sailing announcement...

Gary Jobson Elected President of US SAILING at Annual General Meeting

LEAGUE CITY, Texas (Oct. 24, 2009) – On Saturday night at US SAILING’s Annual General Meeting, Gary Jobson was elected by the new board of directors as the next president of the sport’s national governing body.

In his acceptance speech at the board of directors meeting, Jobson highlighted his plans for US SAILING. He discussed the philosophy of the organization and explained US SAILING’s goal to create opportunities for more people to sail and encourage participation, especially among youth.
“We want to make sailing safe, easy, and fair,” said Jobson. “We’ll work to make sailing available to everyone.”
Increased visibility for US SAILING and awareness of the sport is a high priority for Jobson. He also put an emphasis on elevating US SAILING’s National Championships. Jobson is focusing on creating value for the US SAILING membership.
“We will not make a US SAILING membership mandatory,” Jobson stated. “We want people and organizations to become members of US SAILING because we provide a great service for sailors, and we want to inspire others to get involved with the sport.”

The board of directors also elected Tom Hubbell as vice president, Leslie Keller as treasurer, Fred Hagedorn as secretary, and Stan Honey as the select director.

Jobson has been a strong supporter of US SAILING and was a member of the organization’s board of directors. He also has served on the Olympic Sailing Committee for 12 years.
A world class sailor, television commentator and author, Jobson has served as an ambassador to the sport. He has authored 16 sailing books including the first US SAILING Instructor’s Manual, and is editor-at-large of Sailing World and Cruising World magazines. Jobson was the television broadcast producer for the sailing competition at the 2008 Olympic Games on NBC.

Sailing Puerto Rico - Girls sails around the world

Jessica Watson, a few days into global sailing odyssey, settling into a routine

October 20, 2009 | 3:59 pm

Reading Jessica Watson's blog makes me long for the type of freedom she's enjoying, only a few days out from Sydney, Australia, and with an entire planet yet to circle as she aspires to become the youngest person to sail alone, nonstop and unassisted, around the world.

On Monday the 16-year-old adventurer wrote: "It's been so long since I've had anytime just to take it easy for a while and the freedom was amazing. No deadlines, nothing to rush off to, I can eat whatever I like whenever I like, no one to send me off to bed!

"It was pretty special this afternoon when the sea glassed right out, it was as if you could see right to the distant blue bottom apart from huge schools of jellyfish floating past. We even had a couple of dolphins drop in to say hi. The other unexpected visitor was a small plane who circled around overhead, just when I thought I was finally by myself!"

This will change. There will be issues, perhaps very serious problems. Watson is aboard a 34-foot pink sailboat and might have to negotiate swells taller than her boat is long. She has eight months of sailing ahead of her, and safety is not guaranteed.

But for now it's smooth going. On Tuesday she wrote: "It already feels like I'm settling right into a routine, grabbing a bit of sleep through the night and into the morning when I can, logging and plotting my position, digging through the food bags for meals and calling in for phone skeds twice a day. There's always something to do or check.

"I've been hard at work eating my way through all the last-minute presents and sweets that were shoved aboard just before we left. Every time I think I've eaten them all I seem to discover another packet stashed away somewhere!"

Sailing in Puerto Rico - Fajardo Sail Boat trips

Sailing in Puerto Rico - Fajardo Sail Boat trips

This Puerto Rico sailing article was originally posted on http://www.gotopuertorico.com/puerto-rico-watersports.php

With hundreds of miles of coastline and an eternal summer weather, Puerto Rico offers a different beach for every day of the year, from the pure white dunes of Isabela to the black volcanic sands near Punta Santiago in Maunabo. You can even choose your level of excitement, from a stroll in the shimmering shallow waters at Luquillo to a romp in the boisterous surf of Rincón.

For visitors looking to get close to the water, but not necessarily submerge in it, Puerto Rico offers various other water sports. You can be windsurfing, sailing or fishing the deep seas, rivers, lakes or bays. For a little more action, you can go kayaking on the Tanamá River or the Caribbean Sea, or body surf down a rushing mountain stream.

Whatever your favorite water sport is, you can do it better in, on or near the tropical waters of Puerto Rico.

Visit SailPuertoRico.com to learn more about Captain Domingo Garcia and his Puerto Rican sailing trips to Culebra, Fajardo, Icacos, around the Conquistador, and Vieques.

Sailing Fajardo Puerto Rico - Awesome overnight trip to Vieques with Captain Domingo Garcia

Fajardo Puerto Rico Sailing - “Awesome overnight trip to Vieques with Captain Domingo Garcia!”
Ventajero Sailing

My family took an overnight trip with Captain Domingo Garcia on the Ventajero 4 from July 29-30, 2009. We traveled to the coast of Vieques for the first day. We spent the day snorkeling and swimming on terrific beaches. We were the only humans in sight and we had the entire beach to ourselves. It was very private. We then spent the night off the coast of Esperanza on the southern side of the island. The next day we traveled to Icacos Island, off the coast of Fajardo, PR for more snorkeling and swimming. The waters were clear blue. It was like being in a huge swimming pool, surrounded by sea life.

Captain Domingo is an excellent chef. Every meal was gourmet. We enjoyed churassco prepared on a grill attached to the sailboat, marlin covered in a homemade mango butter sauce (yes, the mangos were freshly picked) and an outstanding lasagna. We woke up to the smell of freshly pressed coffee and warm French toast smothered in fresh fruit. Delicious! Throughout the trip, there was a non-stop flow of drinks including a variety of ice cold local beers.

Captain Domingo is a wonderful host. He is also a champion sailor, having formerly won the Rolex Sailing Cup.

We cannot wait to book another trip next summer. The value of the trip far exceeded the price. Our memories of this trip are priceless. Our two children, ages 8 and 9, will remember this trip forever.

Thank you Captain Domingo!

Sincerely,
Michael and Alexandra Waddington

Sailing Puerto Rico

Repositioning cruises offer sweet deals

http://www.kansas.com/living/travel/story/998294.html

In October and throughout November, dozens of cruise ships in European waters are moved from their now-chilly locations and sent on long, trans-Atlantic sailings to the Caribbean or South American waters. Because, when they cross the Atlantic, they are solely at sea for at least five, six or seven days and make no port stops during that time, they are unpopular with the public; passengers with short attention spans can't stand the thought of being aboard a ship that isn't making daily visits to land. And many members of the public can't devote the two-or-so weeks that most repositioning cruises require (several port stops in the Mediterranean before reaching the open sea of the Atlantic, then the crossing, then several port stops on the way to the ultimate destination in Florida or elsewhere).

That's why the cruise lines and the cruise discount brokers often price these repositioning cruises at almost ridiculously low levels in order to fill the cabins aboard them. As you'll see below, some repositioning cruises are being sold for as little as $28.50 a day.

Recently, the urgent need to fill the repositioning ships has led some cruise discount brokers to include trans-Atlantic airfare to the jumping-off point in the overall price of the cruise. Some of them put you up at no charge for a night or two in a first-class hotel at the port of embarkation. Such complex repositionings are, to me, the most desirable of them.

Sailing Puerto Rico

Several outstanding repositioning cruise bargains:

• $28.50 per person per day, for 14 nights (a total of $399), aboard Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, departing Nov. 19 from Lisbon, Portugal, sailing then to the Canary Islands, then crossing the South Atlantic to Recife, Brazil, and proceeding down the coast of Brazil to Rio first, then Sao Paulo. Inside cabin, of course. Obviously, airfare to Lisbon, and then from Sao Paulo back to the States is the big added expense (use of frequent-flyer mileage will often do the trick). Go to VacationsToGo.com to book.

• $46.58 per person per day, for 12 nights (a total of $559) aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, departing Nov. 9 from Malaga, Spain, then sailing to the Canary Islands and then across the South Atlantic to Nassau (Bahamas) and Miami. Inside cabins. You'll obviously have to add airfare to Malaga as your big added expense. VacationstoGo.com makes the offer.

Sailing Trips Fajardo Puerto Rico

Jessica Watson is hoping to become the youngest person to sail solo non-stop and unassisted around the world. (AAP: Supplied)

Jessica, 16, has sailed into Sydney this afternoon and will begin her attempt to sail solo non-stop around the world later this month.

The Sunshine Coast teen hit a cargo ship off southern Queensland last month on the first night of her ill-fated voyage.

But the determined teenager did not let that stop her. Jessica again set sail from Queensland's Gold Coast on Thursday morning.

Jessica's goal has sparked plenty of controversy, with Queensland Premier Anna Bligh urging the teenager to reconsider her trip.

Australian Childhood Foundation CEO Joe Tucci agrees Jessica should rethink the voyage.

"It's risky and dangerous and the push to become the youngest seems to be overriding the perception of realistic danger," he told ABC News Online.

"It'd be in her own interests to wait until she is 18 and then she would be able to legally and ethically make decisions for herself.

"We have to be cautious about what kind of risks we let our young people be exposed to."

An investigation by Queensland's Maritime Safety Bureau (MSQ) concluded Jessica was too inexperienced to sail solo around the world.

But Jessica's mother Julie has shrugged off criticism of her daughter's voyage, describing it as sexist.

She is adamant her daughter is ready to set sail.

But Dr Tucci says Jessica's parents have a duty of care to keep their daughter realistic about what she can achieve.

"Parents need to act as a risk barometer for their kids and encourage them to understand what the consequences are and sometimes hold them back when they think the risks are too great," he said.

"Sometimes kids will want to do something that puts them in danger, and under those circumstances I think a reasonable person would consider sailing around the world to be too dangerous.

"Parents should encourage young people to see the full consequences of their decision."

Dr Tucci hopes it does not go as far as the case of 13-year-old Dutch sailor Laura Dekker.

A Dutch court put a stop to Dekker attempting to become the youngest person ever to sail around the world solo by taking temporary custody of her.

"I would hope that Jessica and her parents come to the decision, rather than going through a court system," Dr Tucci said.

"What parents are doing when they're appropriately cautious is giving those kids the best chance of achieving those dreams at a time when they're able to make the decision for themselves."

Martin's support
But round-the-world sailor Jesse Martin believes people should go easier on the schoolgirl skipper.

Ten years ago, Martin, at the age of 18, sailed into the record books when he became the youngest person to sail solo around the world.

He knows Jessica and he supports her every move. The 28-year-old adventurer says attitude is far more relevant than age.

"To simplify it a lot, you could say it's dangerous to cross the road if you don't look for a car coming," Martin told ABC News Online.

"If you break that down, you look for a car coming because it's commonsense and you're careful so you can apply that same principle to sailing around the world.

"A lot of things can go wrong; you can fall off the side, knock yourself out, but if you take it slow and sensible and treat it as a marathon trip, then it can be done quite safely and it's really a trip of the mind.

"I don't think age should be in question. Is it too young? We'll find out."

Martin says young people should be encouraged to achieve their dreams.

Sailing trips - Teen resumes solo sailing bid

Teen resumes solo sailing bid
SYDNEY - A 16-YEAR-OLD Australian girl bidding for a solo around the world sailing record took to the high seas on Thursday, despite pleas from authorities for her to reconsider after she crashed on a test voyage.

Jessica Watson set off in her bright pink yacht from Queensland's Gold Coast to Sydney, from where she will embark next week on an attempt to become the youngest person to sail non-stop and alone around the world.

Her first effort last month almost ended in disaster when she collided with a 63,000-tonne cargo ship just hours into a trial run to Sydney. Watson dismissed the mishap, which snapped the mast of her 10.23-metre yacht 'Pink Lady' and damaged its rigging and hull, as a 'small hitch' but an official report gave a damning assessment of her performance.

Maritime Safety Queensland found she had probably dozed off before she hit the container ship and did not activate a warning system that would have altered her to a potential collision. It also said the teenager did not have a fatigue management plan and her safety guide consisted of a page torn from a school notebook which was covered in childish doodles.

The safety authority concluded Watson was too inexperienced to attempt the gruelling voyage, prompting Queensland Premier Anna Bligh to this week urge her to abandon the record bid.

'This is a very high-risk venture, frankly it's one that I would be reconsidering, but ultimately it's a decision for them,' Bligh said on Monday.

The girl's mother Julie Watson hit back at critics Thursday and said he daughter would not be deterred.

'A lot of people making statements about her to the media don't know what preparation she has done,' she told public broadcaster ABC. 'I have seen the level of commitment, the work she has put in, the preparation.'

Watson, who has been sailing since she was eight, hopes to complete a 23,000 nautical mile journey around Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope and over the unforgiving Southern Ocean before returning to Australia. Watson hopes to surpass fellow Australian Jesse Martin's feat in completing the journey aged 18 in 1999.

In August, a Dutch court ruled 13-year-old Laura Dekkers could not embark on a solo round-the-world voyage and placed her in the care of social services. -- AFP

Sail Puerto rico - Hurricane Erika threatening The Bahamas

Hurricane Erika threatening The Bahamas

By JASMIN BONIMY ~ Guardian Staff Reporter ~ jasmin@nasguard.com:

Local forecasters are keeping a close eye on the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane season's fifth named storm, whose current projected path places it over The Bahamas on the weekend.

At 5 p.m. yesterday, Tropical Storm Erika was 320 miles east-southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and 700 miles southeast of Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos.

The storm was moving westward at about 10 miles per hour. It had maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour, and tropical storm force winds extended outward up to 205 miles, according to information released by the Department of Meteorology.

Forecaster Greg Thompson said the storm is expected to first impact the southern Bahamas as it makes its way up the archipelago.

"We don't expect it to strengthen very much over the next few days, at least not into a hurricane," explained Thompson. "They are forecasting it to remain a tropical storm up until Saturday morning as it moves just to the north of the Dominican Republic and then moving very near to the Southeast Bahamas. As a matter of fact, it will weaken to a depression."

Thompson said the storm will begin ushering in heavy rain, gusts of wind and cloudy skies in the south by Sunday while northern and central islands will begin feeling Erika's impact early Monday morning.

The National Hurricane Center in the United States has projected Erika's wind speed will increase to as much as 60 to 65 miles per hour over the next two days before dropping back to about 55 miles per hour by the weekend.

Tropical storm warnings have been issued for Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, St. Martin, Saba and St. Eustatius.

Erika has forced at least one cruise ship sailing in the eastern Caribbean to change course.

In a press release issued yesterday, Carnival Cruise Lines said the Carnival Glory remained at sea yesterday instead of visiting St. Martin as originally scheduled.

The 2,974-passenger vessel, which departed Port Canaveral, Florida, on Saturday, instead will visit Grand Turk today before returning to Florida.

Puerto Rico Sailing - Lincolnville man is world sailing champion

Lincolnville man is world sailing champion
By Staff

NEWPORT, R.I. (Image courtesy of SallyAnne Santos/Winldlass Creative)

The sunshine and light air that opened the regatta on day one yielded to heavy winds and leaden skies for the balance of the series.

On the penultimate day of the championship, during the second race of the day, visibility shut down to less than 100 yards when driving rain squalls went through the course.

While two races were run for each division, wind readings of 25 knots eliminated plans to run additional races.

The final day of the series was a light air chase in low visibility courtesy of the stalled low pressure system that generated frequent heavy downpours.

In the 10-Boat Modern Division, all was set for a duel between Scoundrel, driven by Rob Gray of Great Britain, and Sophie II, with New York native Hugo Stenbeck of Sweden at the helm, who were tied or within a point of each other for much of the series.

At the end of the penultimate day of racing, a disqualification picked up by Sophie II looked like it might be her undoing. However, even a first-place by Scoundrel in the final race of the series was not enough to win her the championship.

Tied with 17 points each, Sophie IIwon by having two second-place finishes to Scoundrel’s one, as each had won three races.

"This is the first world championship I’ve ever sailed in any class," said Stenbeck. "By the skin of our teeth we managed to stay ahead of a very experienced group that we never thought we would be able to compete with."

Stenbeck’s crew included Lars Linger, Jonas Haggbom, both of Sweden, Brendan McCoy of Alabama and 1993 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Lewis of Lincolnville, who was sailing his first regatta with this team.

Among the fleet of Sixes, which represented ten countries — Bermuda, Canada, Finland, France, Denmark, Germany, New Zealand, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States — one of the highlights was the participation of Scout, which was brought from New Zealand by Martin Farrand of Auckland.

Organized by Sail Newport, and held on the grounds of the Museum of Yachting, the 2009 Six Metre World Cup was presented by Rums of Puerto Rico and The Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

Puerto Rico Sailing - Louis Vuitton Launches New World Series of Sailing

Louis Vuitton Launches New World Series of Sailing

Puerto Rico Sailing - Fajardo Sailing Charters

16 September 2009

News & Trends: French luxury goods giant Louis Vuitton has announced plans to inaugurate a new World Series of sailing, beginning with a regatta in Nice in November. The event, to be known as the Louis Vuitton World Series, will be undertaken in association with a new professional sailing group called the World Sailing Team Association (WSTA). Eight racing teams, including K-Challenge (France), BMW Oracle Racing (USA), Emirates Team New Zealand, Mascalzone Latino (Italy), Team Artemis (Sweden), Team Synergy (Russia), Joe Fly Italia (Italy) and Team French Spirit (France) will compete for starters, with others expected to sign up shortly.

Vuitton has a long association with world class sailing dating back to its 25-year sponsorship of the Louis Vuitton Cup, the famed race running up to the America's Cup, and more recently the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series organized in Auckland, New Zealand, last February. LV World Series teams will fight successive duels over a fortnight on two pairs of identical boats chosen by lot in an effort to return to the original spirit of "match racing." The ultimate winner of the series of international regattas will take possession of what is bound to become one of the sports most coveted and prestigious trophies.

Puerto Rico Sailing - Singing, Sailing and Screaming Next Weekend at Cedar Point

There Will Be Singing, Sailing and Screaming Next Weekend at Cedar Point

Sun Sep 13, 2009

SANDUSKY, Ohio, Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Cedar Point amusement park/resort,
recently voted the "Best Amusement Park in the World" for a record 12th
consecutive year, will host a wide variety of special events next weekend that
are sure to thrill guests of all ages.

Christian Music Concert
On Saturday, Sept. 19, Cedar Point guests can rock out to an all-star lineup
of Christian music artists as the park debuts its' first-ever PointFest
festival. The promotion runs through Sept. 30, but you can travel to the Caribbean Island until Dec. 20.

How to book: Go to the Puerto Rico Tourism Company’s Web site, where you will see a list of travel partners offering the Puerto Rico hotel deal. Partners include CheapCaribbean.com, Orbitz, Delta Vacations and Travelocity. In addition to the two nights free, travelers will also receive a Tour Discount Coupon booklet when they arrive at their hotel.

Another perk? U.S. citizens do not need a passport for entry into Puerto Rico.

We searched CheapCaribbean.com and found 4-night stays with airfare starting from $249/person (taxes not included). In May, the company said it was pulling the 2,850-passenger Celebrity Solstice out of Europe for 2010 and basing the ship year-round in the Caribbean.

Celebrity says the Century will depart Miami on May 20 for a 14-night trans-Atlantic voyage visiting Ponta Delgada, Azores; Lisbon, Portugal; and Seville and Malaga, Spain, ending in Barcelona. There, on June 3, the vessel will begin a series of 12-night, roundtrip Mediterranean cruises.

Calls scheduled for the new cruises include Cannes, Monte Carlo, Sicily, Salerno, Florence/Pisa and Rome, Venice, Ephesus, Athens, Mykonos, Dubrovnik and Split, Croatia.

Century will depart Barcelona for a return trip to Miami on Oct. 25, 2010. The 14-night trans-Atlantic voyage will include calls on Malaga, Spain; Madeira, Portugal; and Tenerife and La Palma, Canary Islands.

The ship will resume 4- and 5-night Caribbean sailings on Nov. 8, 2010.

Bookings for the new European sailings open Thursday. The line says passengers who have confirmed bookings for the Century's now-canceled summer sailings in the Caribbean are being given the option of switching their 4- or 5-night cruise to a 7-night Caribbean sailing on the Celebrity Solstice, subject to availability, in a like category at the same fare paid.

Puerto Rico Sailing Charters - Fajardo PR Sailing Trips

http://www.sailpuertorico.com - 787-645-9129 - Puerto Rico Sailing Charters - Fajardo PR Sailing Trips - Snorkeling Excursions - Enjoy sailing the beautiful waters of Fajardo Puerto Rico and its secluded islands. The island of Puerto Rico offers a large diversity of things to do and places to explore. Activities include such things as relaxing on secluded beaches, hiking through dense rain forests, and enjoying five star restaurants. And after a full day of soaking in Puerto Rico, what better way of spending the evening than by visiting a local nightclub or casino? Puerto Rico is famous for its many restaurants, bars, clubs and casinos; just like there is something for everybody to do during the day, the wide variety of nightlife options provides something that will satisfy anybody’s tastes.
The liveliest nightlife on Puerto Rico is found in the metropolis of San Juan. Here in San Juan Metro, the streets are filled with casinos, clubs, restaurants and bars. Whether you prefer a quaint coffee shop or a rowdy disco, you will find what you are looking for here. Isla Verde is the center for the islands hottest discos and night clubs. In Condado, much of the quieter nightlife, such as coffee shops and hotel lobbies, can be found. Santurce is the home of La Placita, which is a favorite spot for locals to party on weekend nights.
If you enjoy gambling, Puerto Rico is definitely the place for you. Year after year, players rate Puerto Rico as the greatest gaming destination in the Caribbean. Even if you are not a gambler, you should take an opportunity to visit Puerto Rico’s casinos. It is an amazing experience to feel the energy inside one of these casinos, where the lights, tables, and sounds all create an absolutely ecstatic ambiance. And safety in these casinos is not a concern because they are highly regulated and protected by the Puerto Rican government. Regulations only permit the operation of casinos in hotels, which means they are located in secure environments with entertainment and amenities which are readily available.
Look out Las Vegas because Puerto Rico offers all of the modern gambling technologies and methods. Each of the nearly ten large casinos in Puerto Rico offer state-of-the-are slot machines, some of which are open 24 hours a day. And to try your luck at one of these casinos, you need not be a guest at the hotel in which the casino is located. Many tourists make an evening of hopping from one casino to the next. The casinos offer a wide variety of gaming options: Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, Baccarat, Pai Gow Poker and Big Six Wheels are only a short list of the games to be found in Puerto Rico’s casinos. Here again, there is something for every type of player.
One thing can be certain when visiting Puerto Rico: The nightlife will not be dull. Regardless of your interest, you will be sure to find it here on this beautiful and exciting island.

PUERTO RICAN VACATIONS - PR - Palmas del Mar

PUERTO RICAN VACATIONS
Although perhaps it doesn’t immediately come to mind when considering your next place to visit on vacation, Puerto Rico is one of the greatest places on earth to spend your vacation. Whether you are looking for a place for high adventure, or simply a nice beach on which you can unwind and relax, Puerto Rico is just the place for you. So if you are planning a trip this year, it would do you well to take Puerto Rico into consideration. It probably won’t require that you gather very much research before realizing how much Puerto Rico has to offer. However, when traveling abroad, to Puerto Rico or otherwise, it can be difficult to ascertain where to stay on your travels. The following article will provide some information which will hopefully be helpful in determining which accommodations will best suit your traveling needs.
Puerto Rico offers such a wide range of activities that it would likely be impossible for anybody to visit there and not find something appealing. And just as there is a wide variety of travel options, there is a wide variety of lodging accommodations. Whether you are looking for something very modest, or something luxurious, there will certainly be something available that fits your travel budget and tastes.
We will begin with the cream of the crop. Puerto Rico has numerous luxury resorts that are located throughout the island, generally right on the beaches. You will find most all of the nicer hotel names that you find here on the mainland: Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, and Ritz-Carlton are only a few of the big names that are represented in Puerto Rico. You will also find beach hotels such as Best Western, Embassy Suites, and Radisson on the island. To many, these beach resorts are considered the prime place to stay while in Puerto Rico. This is largely due to the amenities provided by these resorts such as stellar golf courses, ritzy casinos, exciting nightlife and fine dining. To book a reservation, simply visit the website of the hotel of your choosing.
Next on the list there are more moderately priced hotels, typically located only a few blocks from the beach. These hotels are still very nice, but generally cater to business travelers and, as such, do not offer as many amenities as the beach resorts. For those of you who are looking to save a little money, perhaps these hotels would be a good option.
Moving right along, another very good lodging alternative while on the island of Puerto Rico is staying in what is referred to as a parador. Paradors are smaller than the large hotel chains and are privately owned. The locals of Puerto Rico are an amazing people who are rich in culture and warmly welcoming in nature. Unlike on many islands, the people of Puerto Rico are culturally and racially diverse. Tainos were native to the island and made up all of the island’s people before Spain conquered Puerto Rico and forced the Tainos into slavery. Nearly the entire native population was wiped out at this time, except for a small number of American Indians who fled into the mountains and eventually inter-married with the Spaniards. Those who intermarried came to be known as jibaros, and very few of them remain living on the island today. Spain imported slaves from all over Africa and the island’s racial make up was further diversified when other ethnic groups were brought over to work on the plantations.

Later, in 1898, the United States acquired the Puerto Rico, at which time American influence began to further transform Puerto Rican culture. Later still, when the island was industrialized, laborers were imported from China, France, and Germany. Traces of influence from these countries can still be noticed today. In the 1960s a large influx of Cuban immigrants entered Puerto Rico to escape Castro’s rule, also greatly impacting Puerto Rican culture. Lastly, the people of the Dominican Republic have changed Puerto Rican culture since a large number of Dominican Republicans have migrated to the island. As you can see Puerto Rico has been a melting pot of sorts, and as such, offers a conglomerate of people with a vastly diverse and unique culture.

Today Puerto Rico is one of the world’s most densely populated islands. The island hosts nearly four million people on a land mass that requires them to live with more than 1,000 people per square mile. The high density of Puerto Rico’s population makes for a unique atmosphere and an astounding blend of cross-cultural traditions and rituals. Primarily, these Puerto Ricans are Hispanic. While Puerto Rico is technically a part of the United States, locals to the island take a great pride in Puerto Rico and generally refer to themselves as Puerto Ricans, not Americans.

Visitors to Puerto Rico will be hard pressed not to take notice of the cultural fusion that is apparent in the island’s art, music, food, and architecture. For instance, many of the island’s older buildings are Spanish-colonial in style, while the architecture of the newer buildings is ultra-modern. Also, the music is a unique blend of world music styles that cannot be found anywhere else. Moreover, while many of the historic wonders of Puerto Rico remain, the island is peppered with modern conveniences and amenities which definitely add to the convenience of traveling throughout the island. Words cannot articulate how fascinating the people of Puerto Rico are. Come to Puerto Rico and see for yourself this one and only crossroads of ancient tradition and modern convenience that these people have established.

Getting Around Puerto Rico - PR Palmas del Mar

Getting Around Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico can be a wonderful place to visit. Despite the relatively small size of the island, there is an abundance of things to do and see. According to your tastes, you can spend an entire vacation unwinding on relaxing beaches or you can schedule your itinerary with minute-to-minute high adventure activities. One of the great things about Puerto Rico is that nearly anything you decide to do on the island can be easily accessed due to the ease of transportation. Unlike many other travel destinations, Puerto Rico has taken a keen interest in providing efficient and safe ways for visitors to explore the area.

The first thing you want to know about transportation in Puerto Rico is how to get to the island itself. In almost every instance, airlines fly into Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. This airport is located directly outside of the major city of San Juan, and because Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, the airport is equipped with all of the safety and security measures required under United States law. In addition to this main hub, Puerto Rico has other smaller airports that offer some direct flights from the USA and many flights from region to region within the island.

Once you arrive in Puerto Rico, you will be provided with substantially the same travel options which are offered here on the mainland. Most visitors travel by taxi from the airport to their hotels, although some hotels offer free transportation from the airport to the hotel. Another option is to rent a car from a conveniently located rental agency. If you have any difficulty with finding the right transportation, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, located right in the airport, will be more than happy to provide you with assistance.

After settling into your hotel, there are numerous ways to get around the island, and depending upon which part of Puerto Rico you want to visit, you will usually have more than one mode of transportation from which you can choose from. Throughout the major cities of Puerto Rico are taxis, rental cars, city buses, and "público" vans. In historic Old San Juan, there is a no-charge trolley tour that is available to visitors on most every day. For those of you with the budget and desire for a quick and easy way to explore the extremities of the island, Fernando L. Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan offers flights to surrounding cities and even some of the smaller islands which surround Puerto Rico. Similarly, private boats can be chartered to any of the surrounding islands, and public ferries provide transportation to the islands of Culebra and Vieques.

Traveling to Puerto Rico and getting around once you are there should be absolutely no problem. In fact, with how easy transportation is in Puerto Rico, your biggest problem will be deciding where you want to go, not how you will get there.

REGIONS OF PUERTO RICO

REGIONS OF PUERTO RICO
You may have heard how wonderful of a place Puerto Rico is to visit. Despite being a relatively small island, there is something in Puerto Rico for everybody. The action enthusiast and the person seeking a relaxing getaway alike will have a marvelous experience in Puerto Rico. Perhaps the greatest thing about Puerto Rico is the island’s diversity. In exploring the island, you will be pleased to find many of the world’s cultures as you go from one region to the next. There is much to be seen and much to be learned in Puerto Rico, so be prepared for a wide variety of activities, geography and culture. Also, before going, you should get to know about the various regions of Puerto Rico so you can plan your trip efficiently and effectively.
Puerto Rico can be divided up unto five regions: North, South, East, West and Central. The North Region is made up of ten towns nestled against the Atlantic Ocean, and it is Puerto Rico’s center of commerce. Most of the island’s major resorts and shopping spots are located in the city of San Juan, here in the North Region. You will never have a shortage of things to do or see in the North Region; from fine dining to visiting historic sites to relaxing on beautiful beaches, this region provides a broad array of activities. Some of the most visited spots in the North Region include the historic Old San Juan district, the Rio Camuy Caves in Camuy, and the Arecibo Observatory in Arecibo.
The Southern Region of Puerto Rico is very unique in its own right. Here in the Southern Region you will find a nice mixture of rural and urban environments and you will marvel at the architectural wonders. One thing to know about this region is that it is the hottest and driest part of the island, so be prepared for the weather. Some of the hottest spots of the Southern Region are Aguirre Forest Reserve and Serralles Castle.
No trip to Puerto Rico would be complete without visiting the Eastern Region of the island. This region is known for its natural beauty; amazing sunsets, remote beaches, and snorkeling all make the Eastern Region unique. Some things to check out in the Eastern Region are El Yunque Luquillo Beach, El Faro in Fajardo, and Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve in Fajardo.
The Western Region of Puerto Rico is graced with hundreds of miles of coastline. You will find most of Puerto Rico’s popular beaches here in this region, and it is famous for water sports such as surfing and scuba diving. Some places that visitors enjoy visiting in the Western Region are Boqueron Beach, Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge, and the island’s only zoo, Mayaguez Zoo.
The Central Region of Puerto Rico is the island’s most rugged region. Here in the Central Region, you can explore the Cordillera Central, which climbs to over 4,300 feet above sea level. Visitors to the Central Region will enjoy a serene experience and natural beauty characterized by enormous waterfalls and dense vegetation. Highlights of the Central Region include Montoso Gardens in Maricao and Caguana Indian Ceremonial Park if Utuado.

Palmas del Mar - Puerto Rico

PUERTO RICO - La Isla Del Encanto

Tired of the same old vacation spots? If so, Puerto Rico may be just the place for you. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Rico is the easternmost of the Greater Antilles islands. Although a relatively small island, only 35 miles long by 100 miles wide, Puerto Rico features a tremendously diverse geography and a breathtaking landscape. Explore limestone caves in the northern region of the island; marvel at jagged peaks, windy roads, and old coffee plantations in the island’s center, called Cordillera Central; or stand in awe of some of nature’s most stunning dry and rain forests. If the excitement gets too much, relax on a secluded beach on the islands coastal plains.

Regardless of the time of year you plan to visit, count on moderate temperatures. Although somewhat cooler in the mountains and at night, the temperature remains around 82 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year. The coastal breeze helps to moderate heat and humidity, so come prepared to visit the beaches – from sandy to rocky, white sand to black sand. Keep in mind, however, that the rainy season is between June and November, and there is periodically hurricane danger during these months.

Puerto Rico’s rich history lends itself to a diverse culture that will surely prove captivating. Puerto Ricans have deep African, Indian, and European roots that are very apparent in the local culture. Listen to unique hybridized Latin and African music with American and Spanish influences, or walk through villages decorated with Taino art and amazing Spanish and African architecture. After a full day of exploring the island, you will likely work up an appetite for Puerto Rican cuisine, referred to as comida criolla. Choose from a selection of locally caught fish, or enjoy the popular traditional chicken dish, arroz con pollo. Communicating with locals should not be difficult for Americans, as most locals speak both Spanish and English.

The Puerto Rican government encourages tourists and locals alike to enjoy the island’s natural beauty. For instance, local government has improved many of the natural areas and beaches with facilities and parks to provide comfort and accessibility. Also, all Puerto Rican beaches are public property, and some of which are designated balnearios, meaning they are equipped with parking lots, showers, lockers, restrooms, refreshments, picnic sites, and lifeguards. The island also features 20 public forest areas, or reserves forestales, which have miles of hiking trails and stunning nature exhibits. Some of the forest areas allow camping, but make arrangements beforehand, as a permit may be required.

The island of Puerto Rico has a wide variety of lodging options available, so you can be sure to find just the right accommodations. For a genuine local experience, try any of the small hotels, called paradores, located throughout the island. Cabanas (cabins) are also located throughout the island for approximately $75 per night. For a little more money, try one of the centro vacacionales, located on the coast or set deep in the islands interior mountains. If you are trying to be cost efficient, there are camping and vacation centers available at an affordable rate.
Regardless of where you stay in Puerto Rico, you will surely be charmed by la isla del encanto, the enchanted island.

About us
